Choa Chu Kang Cemetery

Not long ago, I visited the Choa Chu Kang Cemetery in Singapore, which was quite fascinating. Of course, I knew that cemeteries are not just for remembering a person, but also a place for the living.

The cemetery is quite different from most of Singapore and also quite a contrast to the Japanese cemetery I had visited previously. Choa Chu Kang was more rustic and less manicured than I had expected.

I brought my Leica M11 along for this mini-project. Although I often prefer to shoot such places in monochrome, I decided to use muted colors to reflect the balance between solitude and hope and better capture the mood of the cemetery.

I certainly will come back to discover more about Singapore's cemeteries. They all have unique individual histories within them, and I want to capture them all with my camera.

Visiting a cemetery may be low on your to-do list, but you are missing out on a great place to reflect and enjoy the open space. Go visit; you might be surprised by what you find.
